چکیده

Performances of some common confidence interval construction procedures for direct standardized incidence or mortality rate were compared. The asymptotic method, the method based on matching moments, the method based on gamma distribution and the method based on beta distribution were investigated through Monte Carlo simulations based on data from an epidemiologic study of cardiovascular disease and randomly generated scenarios. These interval estimation procedures, as well as some mixed procedures developed for the present study, were evaluated in terms of their coverage probability and expected length. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Estimating and Comparing Specific Mediation Effects in Complex Latent Variable Models

This teaching note starts with a demonstration of a straightforward procedure using Mplus Version 6 to produce a bias-corrected (BC) bootstrap confidence interval for testing a specific mediation effect in a complex latent variable model. The procedure is extended to constructing a BC bootstrap confidence interval for the difference between two specific mediation effects. The extended procedure...

Practice of Epidemiology Estimation of the Standardized Risk Difference and Ratio in a Competing Risks Framework: Application to Injection Drug Use and Progression to AIDS After Initiation of Antiretroviral Therapy

There are few published examples of absolute risk estimated from epidemiologic data subject to censoring and competing risks with adjustment for multiple confounders. We present an example estimating the effect of injection drug use on 6-year risk of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) after initiation of combination antiretroviral therapy between 1998 and 2012 in an 8-site US cohort stud...

Trends in Lung Cancer Incidence Rates by Histological Type in 1975–2008: A Population-Based Study in Osaka, Japan

BACKGROUND Monitoring trends in lung cancer incidence and mortality is important for the evaluation of cancer control activities. We investigated recent trends in age-standardized incidence rates by histological type of lung cancer in Osaka, Japan. METHODS Cancer incidence data for 1975-2008 were obtained from the Osaka Cancer Registry. Lung cancer mortality data with population data in Osaka...

Bayes Interval Estimation on the Parameters of the Weibull Distribution for Complete and Censored Tests

A method for constructing confidence intervals on parameters of a continuous probability distribution is developed in this paper. The objective is to present a model for an uncertainty represented by parameters of a probability density function.  As an application, confidence intervals for the two parameters of the Weibull distribution along with their joint confidence interval are derived. The...

Improving surveillance system and surgical site infection rates through a network: A pilot study from Thailand

BACKGROUND Surveillance of surgical site infections (SSI) provides data upon which interventions to improve patient safety can be based. In Thailand, however, SSI surveillance has not yet been standardized. OBJECTIVES To develop a standardized SSI surveillance system and to monitor SSI rates after introduction of such a system. METHODS We conducted a prospective study among 17,752 patients ...
